ChatGPT and Job Search
New Korn Ferry Usage SurveyChatGPT in the workplaceThere is no doubt that AI platforms have captured the attention of the business world. According to a survey of professionals in various industries, 46% already use ChatGPT to perform work tasks. Additionally, more than 80% said ChatGPT is a "legal, beneficial work tool" that will become a regular part of their workday going forward.
As other tech giants develop similar technology, experts say such a platform could be used for much more than that. On Wall Street, for example, stock traders and asset managers are already using ChatGPT to analyze stock trends and company data to more accurately predict stock prices. Sales teams use it to find patterns in customer feedback and suggest next steps. With ChatGPT, operations teams can better assess risk and content writers can come up with clever phrases and catchphrases faster. (Colwell, E. (2023, March 23).CHATGPT attacks the workplace. While technology such as artificial intelligence is very beneficial, it also has disadvantages. What challenges should be considered when using a tool like ChatGPT for job hunting?
- No personal contact details:AI is programmed to scan vast amounts of information and identify it based on predefined criteria. While this can be effective, it can also be impersonal. AI may not take into account other important factors that a recruiter or talent acquisition representative might consider.
- Misinterpretation of data:AI can misinterpret data or miss important details, leading to misidentification of skills. This can be frustrating for any job seeker who is looking for a specific job or has a specific skill set.
- Limited ability to assess soft skills:While AI is good at identifying hard skills (such as programming languages or certifications), it may be even better at identifying soft skills, such as communication or teamwork. warn
ChatGPT is not an authoritative source. In fact, it doesn't mention the source of the information at all. Therefore, you need to verify the accuracy of the information it provides.
Do not use raw output as the final product. In other words, don't cut and paste ChatGPT answers as your own work. Be sure to edit the answer to sound more like yours before using it.
There are tools that can identify content that may have been created by artificial intelligence. They are called AI Content Detectors or ChatGPT Detectors. If you don't edit responses from ChatGPT, you should know that your work can be called. (https://careersherpa.net/use-chatgpt-in-job-search/)
Now that we're talking about warnings, let's talk about ethics and ChatGPT
I came across a very informative article that made me question my opinion of ChatGPT. Here are some ethics and ChatGPT highlights written by the President of Sierra Sierra (an intern in the UNC Office of Ethics and Policy). The entire article can be foundhere.
What are the ethical issues with using AI tools like ChatGPT?
"When users log into the ChatGPT website, they are asked to provide three sets of information, one of which identifies the most important limitations of the platform.2ChatGPT's disclaimer says AI "may occasionally generate incorrect information" and "may occasionally generate harmful instructions or biased content." OpenAI, ChatGPT's parent company, also clarified in a statement that ChatGPT often reflects Western views, can exacerbate bias over time, and doesn't always produce classroom-appropriate material.3
Knowing how unreliable this source is, it's understandable that many professors and students don't know what to think about its uses.
In a BestColleges survey of students' views on the new artificial intelligence platform, 51 percent of respondents said they thought it was a scam.4Sixty percent of those in the same study said their university or faculty had not commented on the ethics behind its use. 61% said they believe AI (such as ChatGPT) will become the new normal. *(President, S. Can we use AI to detect AI?
“However, teachers need not fear because AI detection tools are available. AI detectors were created to determine whether text was generated by AI or humans. AI detectors use a combination of data to compare human text with AI text , and note any patterns that could identify the origin of the text. However, anyone using these detection tools should exercise caution, as the accuracy of these tools will vary based on the AI detector used and the length of text the tool is expected to evaluate Variation. I decided to type in an introductory paragraph written entirely by ChatGPT on three different websites to test these AI detectors online to see if they could detect AI.
- GPT zero, claiming to be the #1 AI detector in the world, but determined that my input was "probably entirely human-written", which we know is untrue. If educators plan to use GPTZero's conclusions, educators should consider GPTZero's information only as part of their evaluation and should maintain a holistic view of each case, the website says.
- Scale contentProvides a percentage rating for human content. The site has determined that a combination of artificial intelligence and human-generated information exists. More specifically, the detector gave the passage a human content score of 72%, determining that the first sentence was robot-generated, and most likely human-generated. The detector doesn't seem to identify other sentences as non-artificial.
- fullUsed to determine the presence of GPT-3, GPT-4, or ChatGPT in text. The site says there is only a 30 percent chance that a sample passage came from one of these AI platforms.
Note that the length of the sample text can affect the accuracy of the results. For example, OpenAI's AI text classifier couldn't scan the example paragraph because it didn't meet the minimum number of characters. OpenAI has publicly stated that the detector is only 26% accurate even if the text meets the minimum character count. ” (S. An interesting quote that I think sums up ChatGPT's use in the workplace, academia, job hunting (for now...) is from the same article:
"It will take time to define a true ethics around ChatGPT, as it develops faster than universities can respond"
