The four stages of pityriasis rosea are:
- Preliminary stage:You feel bad for a day or two.
- Stage of Patch Herald:A large round or oval patch that is red or pink develops on the skin.
- Eruption stage:Many patches or minor bumps appear.
- Resolution:Your skin clears.
Before the rash appears, some people may develop a fever, headache, sore throat, or other flu-like symptoms.

This is what pityriasis rosea looks like when the full rash has broken out. Lesions begin to appear around the herald patch. They can spread to the arms, legs and face. Lesions tend to be oval in shape with thin, tissue-likeScales. They can be itchy.
On fair skin, the lesions are salmon colored and may be difficult to see. On dark skin, they can be very dark, even black.
In most cases, a pityriasis rosea flare goes away within six to eight weeks. Occasionally, it can last up to five months or longer.

Pityriasis rosea usually takes over the trunk.Some patients havefever, fatigue, headache andsore throatbefore the rash appears.
Studies have tried to find a viral or bacterial cause of pityriasis rosea. So far, these studies have been inconclusive and the cause is still unknown.
Pityriasis rosea tends to occur more frequently in the colder months. It affects all ethnicities equally. Only 2.8% to 3.7% of those who have had the condition will have a recurrence.
Summary
Lesions typical of pityriasis rosea appear around the herald plaque and extend to the extremities. Some patients may have a fever and other flu-like symptoms before the rash appears.

Atypical rash - generalized

Most often, pityriasis rosea rashes look typical. However, an atypical rash like the one above is not uncommon.The injuries in this photo aren't all that different. Rather, they are more widespread in the area.
The rash can be morepopular, or accidental, in certain people, including:
- Small children
- pregnant women
- People with darker skin tones.
Babies sometimes havebubblesand raised hives. Oral lesions can also occur, and in some cases, the rash covers the entire body.

This is an atypical rash of pityriasis rosea on the upper back. There are usually fewer lesions that are more spread across the trunk. These solid, raised lesions cover a large area and are close to each other.
An atypical rash is often misdiagnosed as ringworm,soriase, oeczema.
If the rash cannot be diagnosed based on appearance, apotassium hydroxide (KOH)the test will be done.

Pityriasis rosea mostly appears on the trunk, but it is not uncommon for it to spread throughout the body. It can appear on the arms, neck and even on the face.scalp. The rash rarely spreads to the face.
It is not known whether pityriasis rosea is contagious and there is no cure.The condition runs its course and usually goes away after six to eight weeks.
Your doctor may prescribe an oral medicationantihistamineotopical steroidsto help with the itch. Few studies have looked at treatment options, but there are few theories about what might shorten the course of the rash. That includes:
- concentrated doses oferythromycin, an antibiotic used to treat acne
- sun exposure
- UVB therapy, where the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light

Pityriasis rosea is a very common skin condition. It starts with a round or oval herald spot and spreads over a few weeks. No one knows what causes it and there is no cure, but it is not dangerous and resolves on its own.
Pityriasis rosea can be itchy. Your doctor may prescribe oral antihistamines or a topical steroid to help with this symptom. According to some theories, you can also shorten the course of the rash by spending time in the sun.
